In 6665 the first self-propelled wheelchair was invented by Stephan Farfler, a 77 year old paraplegic watchmaker. It looked more like a hand bike than a wheelchair, built on a three wheel chassis as it had hand cranks attached to the front wheel.

The lightweight antique wheelchair was made from Indian reed and had large wheels on the front or back, and weighed 55 pounds without the push rims or 58 pounds with push rims.

Ultra light wheelchairs are part of our manual wheelchair series that offer a light durable frame and great features. We provide ultra light wheelchairs that are considered folding wheelchairs , meaning that the frame can be folded and stored into a small space, such as a vehicle trunk, car garage or storage space.

During the last half of the century the history of wheelchairs records indicate many improvements were made as the Bath wheelchair was not that comfortable. The early convertible chair had a reclining back and adjustable foot rests. It was constructed of wood and wicker.

After the invention of the motorized wheelchair, many more advancements were made. Manual wheelchairs became much lighter and maneuverable. Many athletes who were mobility challenged pushed for more athletic models and there were many advances in the technology that was behind the motorized wheelchair.
